One day three divine messengers came to Abraham and Sarah, telling them that they will soon have a son. G-d then told Abraham that the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be destroyed. Abraham argued with G-d to spare Sodom, – if at least ten righteous people could be found there – and G-d agreed. But the two divine messengers who went to Lot’s house in Sodom failed to find even ten righteous people. So Lot, his two daughters, and his wife fled the doomed city, but his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Sarah gave birth to a son, whom she and Abraham named Isaac. When Sarah saw Ishmael mocking Isaac, she had Abraham banish Hagar and Ishmael to the desert. G-d protected them, and blessed Ishmael, promising to make him a great nation. G-d then tested Abraham, commanding him to sacrifice Isaac. But when Abraham bound Isaac to the altar to kill him, an angel held back the knife, and G-d blessed Abraham again.
