In this portion we see G-d calling Abram to leave his home and go to the land of Canaan. So Abram and Sarai, together with their nephew Lot, settled in Canaan. G-d blessed Abram, promising him countless descendants, and made a covenant with him. But Sarai was barren. She gave Abram her maid Hagar to bear a child in her place, and Hagar gave birth to a son, Ishmael. G-d promised Abram that Sarai too would soon bear a son. Then G-d changed Abram’s name to Abraham, and Sarai’s name to Sarah. When Ishmael was thirteen and Abraham was ninety-nine, Abraham circumcised himself, his son, and all the males of his household.
